Make the Most of the Harvard University Student Health Insurance Program

The Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP) is comprised of two parts: The Student Health Fee (SHF) and the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Knowing how your insurance works can lower your out-of-pocket expenses. Learn more.

Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) is here for you:
  •  With the SHF you are eligible for office visits at any of the four HUHS campus clinics.  These services include x-rays, physical therapy, specialty care, urgent care (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), mental health counseling, and more.  These services are available to you even if you waive SHIP. Make the most of your health plan benefits:
  • Use in-network providers. SHIP is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) and is a PPO plan. To ensure the lowest out-of-pocket costs, try to make the HUHS your first stop for medical care. If you seek care outside of HUHS, choose a provider in the "BCBS PPO network.”  Familiarize yourself with plan benefits, limitations, and exclusions to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs. Learn more.

  • Choose lower cost sharing hospitals. As a SHIP member, you are empowered to control your own out-of-pocket costs based on the hospital you choose for care. In Massachusetts, acute care hospitals are grouped into two different cost-sharing levels. When you choose lower cost sharing hospitals, you will pay less for certain services. Learn more

  • Ask about generic prescriptions. Using a generic medication instead of a brand name medication can save you money. Ask your doctor if there is a generic form of the medication you are being prescribed. If your prescription is written by a doctor at HUHS, you can fill your prescription at the HUHS Pharmacy and they can charge the copayment to your student bill. Learn more.
