The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), covers you for medical care and prescription drugs throughout the United States and abroad.

If you waived the Student Health Insurance Plan, check with your alternative insurance to determine how you are covered while traveling.

How Benefits are Covered Throughout the United States

In-network

You will be responsible for copayments when you seek care from BCBS PPO providers throughout the United States.

In-network providers will submit claims directly to BCBS.

Out-of-network

You will be responsible for a $250 deductible plus 30 percent co-insurance.

Out-of-network providers will ask you to pay upfront for services; you will have to file for reimbursement.

You can be balance billed the difference between what the provider charges for care and what the plan allows for payment.

How to Find a Provider

Visit the Blue Cross Blue Shield website
Search for a provider by name, specialty, or location
Select PPO/EPO with Hospital Choice Cost Sharing feature from the network drop-down (for in-network benefits) when in Massachusetts; select PPO/EPO when outside of Massachusetts.

Please note that you will have higher out-of-pocket costs if you choose to see an out-of-network provider.

When you receive ancillary or additional services (such as labs or durable medical equipment) from an in-network provider, those services will be covered as an out-of-network benefit if the ordering provider and the provider rendering care are located in different states.
